Smithfield Receives Increased Funds For Improved Recycling

Smithfield Receives Increased Funds For Better Recycling

(L-R) Recycling Coordinator Maureen McManus, Town Council Member Maxine Cavanagh, Finance Director Randy R. Rossi, Town Manager Dennis G. Finlay

A Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation (RIRRC) profit sharing event was held on Wednesday, September 24, 2014 at the RIRRC facility in Johnston. This year, the Town received a larger profit share as a result of two factors, an increased recycling percentage rate and a larger pool of funds made available for distribution.

The Town of Smithfield’s average percentage recycling rate has increased from approximately 24.5% to 30.7% since the adoption of the automated collection program. This is a great achievement which has enabled the Town to receive a larger profit share from RIRRC than the previous year.

There is still more work to be accomplished. The Town needs to increase our recycling rate to 35% in the near future, as mandated by RIRRC. Presently, if the Town does not attain the required 35% recycling rate when required, it will be ineligible to participate in the profit sharing program.

Please try to assist the Town in meeting the mandate. We all will reap the rewards.

If you have any questions about recycling, you can find answers to most questions on the Town’s website, www.smithfieldri.com/recycling/ or contact the Town’s recycling coordinator, Maureen McManus at 401-233-1034 ext 105 or mmcmanus@smithfieldri.com.
