Yard Waste Pickup Schedule Change

Updated 7-21-2008

Additional collections have been added to the lawn and yard waste collection scheduled for the Town of Smithfield. Curbside collection of yard waste will take place on residents’ regular trash day the weeks of July 28, August 11 (a holiday week that delays all waste collection by one day), August 25, September 8, and September 22. Collection will not take place the week of September 15. October 4 through December 5 lawn and yard waste will be collected weekly. The 2009 yard waste collection schedule will be determined in the coming months. More>>>

The decision made by the Town of Smithfield to collect yard waste once per month for July, August, and September was not made lightly.  The Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation (RIRRC) can manage only a portion of the compostable waste generated by the residents of the State and therefore has made significant cuts in the amount of yard waste they will accept from all towns.  RIRRC has reduced the limit on the amount of yard waste The Town of Smithfield can take to Johnston for composting from 100 pounds per household per year to 30 pounds per household per year.  The fees the Town would pay for exceeding this limit are significant.

Through the summer the Town will collect yard waste the second full week of the month on your regular trash day.  Collection will take place the weeks of July 14, August 11 (a holiday week that delays all waste collection one day), and September 15.  To manage yard waste the Town of Smithfield encourages residents to use mulching lawn mowers (any lawn mower can be converted to a mulching mower) or to compost their yard waste.  A properly maintained compost pile will not smell or encourage insects to congregate.)  Yard waste can also be disposed of directly at the RIRRC facility in Johnston for a fee of $23 per ton or at Smithfield Peat for $7 per cubic yard.

In the fall and spring (October 6 through December 5, 2008 and April 6 through June 26, 2009) when autumn leaves need to be disposed of, yard waste will be collected weekly.

Due to a statewide shortage of RIRRC recycling bins, the Town of Smithfield Department of Public Works does not have recycling bins available for purchase at this time.  If your recycling bin is unusable or if you do not have one, you can use any container labeled “Cans and Bottles” or “Paper.”  During the state shortage, we will allow residents to use cardboard boxes to set out recycling.  After the shortage has ended, we will no longer accept cardboard boxes and will require a labeled reusable container such as a storage bin, laundry basket, garbage can, bucket... Be creative!

How to I dispose of a refrigerator, stove, washer, dryer or water heater?
White goods/appliances are collected
on the 1st Friday of the month. To schedule a pick up, call us at 233-1034 by 11:00 AM on the Thursday before the first Friday, leaving your address and the item being discarded.   Please place white goods/appliances out for collection no earlier than 24 hours before the scheduled pick-up day. Please remove doors from refrigerators, and place next to the unit.  You can also use the online form here to contact us.

How do I dispose of leftover paint?
The best option is to use up all of the paint. If you have a substantial amount left over from your project, try contacting elementary schools, theater groups, Habitat for Humanity, the Ronald McDonald House, or other community groups to see if they can use your paint for their projects.

Latex paint: Allow the paint to solidify, and then dispose the paint and the can in your regular trash. There are commercially available agents (as well as cat litter, sand or sawdust) that speed the solidifying process along. You can also simply pour thin layers (about 1" of paint) into a cardboard box lined with plastic and then allow the paint to dry one layer at a time until all paint has hardened.

Oil paint: Oil paint is a household hazardous waste, and must be taken to the Eco-Depot, either the main location at the Central Landfill in Johnston or at one of the satellite locations held around the state. Smithfield is hosting a household hazardous waste drop-off on Saturday, August 19, 2006. Call the DPW for more information.

  • Yard waste must be placed at the curb on your regular day of collection.
  • Yard waste must be placed in acceptable biodegradable containers, paper bags, or uncovered trash barrels labeled “Yard Waste.”
  • Branches and brush must be cut in lengths of 3 feet, bundled and tied.
  • Milled lumber is not accepted.
  • Call the Highway Department at 233-1034 for details.

Is there a limit on yard waste disposal?

All residents are limited to 240 gallons of both household and yard waste per week which equates to seven to eight 32 gallon barrels, or bags.  However, the town attempts to make concessions during the spring and fall leaf season and we ask that you do the same by spacing out your leaves over several weeks. -- REMEMBER!
