Electronic Waste Collection Suspended

e-wasteATTENTION SMITHFIELD RESIDENTS:
Curbside Electronic Collection and DPW Drop-off of Electronics Suspended

Due to circumstances beyond the Town’s control, ORS, the vendor providing Electronic Collection Service and Recycling, will no longer accept e-waste from the Town of Smithfield.  Electronic items that are banned from disposal at the landfill such as televisions, computer towers, monitors, laptops and tablets are considered Hazardous Household Waste and may NOT be placed in trash carts.  Residents of the Town of Smithfield may bring these items to RIRRC, 65 Shun Pike- Johnston, RI for recycling, free of charge.  Normal Hours of Operation: Mon.-Fri: 6:00 am-3:45 pm, Sat: 6:00 am-12:00 pm.  Peripheral items such as keyboards, a mouse, printers, etc. and other electronic equipment that is not considered hazardous, such as DVD players, telephones stereo equipment, etc. may be disposed of in your green lid trash cart.

Other Drop-Off Options:

  • Goodwill: Accepts computers, computer peripherals (keyboard, mouse, printers, etc.), stereo equipment, DVD players, telephones, and small appliances like blenders, coffee makers, food processors, hair dryers, etc. – NO TVs or printers.
  • Indie Cycle, LLC.:  Hosts weekly collection events and accepts “anything that uses electricity” EXCEPT light bulbs.
  • Best Buy stores also take back TVs, monitors and other electronics, no matter where item was purchased. Call ahead to your local store to confirm they will accept your item(s). Best Buy takes three items per household per day.

This change by ORS has affected many communities in RI.  RI Resource Recovery (RIRRC) is working to find alternate options for municipalities to provide to their residents.  The Town of Smithfield is considering other programs for electronic waste disposal such as Town Sponsored Drop-off Events.  Please look to the Town’s Trash and Recycling webpage for updates at   http://smithfieldri.com/recycling/ .   For any questions, please call 401-233-1034 X 105.  We apologize for the short notice and any inconvenience this may cause.
